Stroller Strides – DMMB Contributor, Sarah E.
Stroller Strides® is a total fitness program that moms can do WITH their babies. It includes power walking/jogging and intervals of strength and body toning exercise using exercise tubing, your stroller, and the environment. Taught by certified fitness instructors with specialty training in the pre and post natal woman, it is a great workout for ANY level of exerciser.
Great Group of Moms – The moment I walked up to the circle of ladies warming up next to their strollers, I felt welcome and not-at-all judged. This was so important for me, as I haven’t truly worked out since 2013. Everyone seemed genuinely interested in each other and their children. It felt like that “tribe” you keep hearing about!
A True Workout – I’ll be honest and say that I used to see those groups of moms jogging through the parks with their strollers and think “that’s a cute meetup!” I never actually considered that it went much farther than jogging and chatting. I was really surprised! Halfway through my second (of three) set of strength exercises, I thought my legs were going to leave my body and quit. It takes me a couple of days to recover from these workouts!
Knowledgeable Instructors – Having been so long out of the workout world, I forgot how incredibly valuable it is having instructors who understand how a body works out best. If I’m doing exercises alone, my form is definitely off. I simply don’t know enough about these workouts to utilize them properly! The instructors at Fit4Mom are sharp and friendly and will help you move your body during the workout in a way that will give you the maximum benefit.
Team Environment – This is the most important element for me: if I have friends around me with the same goals, I will work harder! Having ten of us doing the same exercises makes me feel competitive enough to keep up with the pack, supported in my struggles, and celebrated in my triumphs. The best part is that everyone there knows what it’s like to “lose” your body to motherhood, and how intense the fight is to get that body back.
Your Children Benefit – The days after I brought my two-year-old daughter to class with me, she was doing the same exercises she watched me do. It made me feel like superwoman to see her doing her toddler version of burpees and saying, “I exercise like mommy!” Stroller Strides also includes optional playgroups after classes that include free play, crafts and even small field trips!
Body Back – DMMB Contributor, Jackie M.
Body Back® is an 8-week results-based workout designed for moms who want their body back, whether they just had a baby or their last child was born twenty years ago! The session includes 2 workouts per week in a small group format, a meal plan and food diary, before and after fitness assessments and measurements, online coaching and support and a workout DVD. When done with commitment and change in mind, moms have a surefire combination for success.
Before I started Body Back, I was not in a good place as far as diet and healthy practices. I was at a point where I was not taking care of myself, and I was tired of it. I was finding time to shop, get my crafting time in for my Etsy shop, and get some occasional mani/pedis. But I was not making health a priority. It had been 18 months since I had given birth, and I was ready to commit to making a change. I was tired of my clothes fitting tight, tired of not loving what I saw in the mirror, and tired of hearing myself talk about wanting to make a change and not doing anything about it. I needed a place that would encourage me to meet my goals, hold me accountable, and give me motivation. Body back did just that.
Mom-ME Time – Being a mom is tough, and so is finding the time to take care of yourself. We focus all of our time and energy on taking care of our child(ren) and far too little on ourselves. Body Back is a guaranteed time to focus on YOU. It’s a place to clear your mind, take some deep breaths and focus on goals to improve your lifestyle and self esteem. Something that every mom needs. I am a better mom and wife after I have some ME time, especially when it’s about bettering myself.
Trackable Assessments – The first class and the last class is an assessment. It involves pictures, running a mile, holding plank and side plank as long as possible, doing as many possible reps in one minute on a few various exercises. Oh what fun it is to see how much your physical fitness can improve in 8 weeks!
Motivation – There is nothing better to motivate me than weekly weigh ins. I needed to make sure that number went down every week, in order to meet my 10 pound weight loss goal. When I would be tempted by sugar or a bowl of queso, I would think about what that would do to my weigh in. Being surrounded by 10 other awesome mamas is also a great motivation. Everyone encourages and supports each other. And you wouldn’t believe how much faster you run a mile along side others who are also pushing their limits.
Healthy Diet Practices – This was a big one for me. Body Back really changed my mentality when it comes to food. I did not follow the diet 100%, because I had to be realistic. I love cheese! And if it’s my birthday, I’m going to eat cake. But I was ok with this. I made healthy meals, watched my portion size (especially when dining out) and stopped eating late night treats. This also forced me to plan ahead. I need to know what I’m eating the next day the night before. The best part is that these healthy practices are staying
mostly with me.
Challenging and Unique Workouts – No workout is the same, and no workout is boring. Half of the classes are ‘traveling’ classes where we move around the park to different locations. The playground, the stage, the field. Oh, and the dreaded HILL. My personal favorite workout was done on a pedestrian bridge. I looked forward to the workouts, and not many people can say that about working out at night. And boy did I feel good after.
Constant Support – Body Back has its own, private Facebook group where the instructor and participants are open and encouraged to post. We post pictures of great meals, questions, recipes, motivational quotes, and the instructor posts weekly workouts, reminders and homework. The instructor was also available anytime to answer questions, and to check out ingredients on questionable foods. She even helped me pick out meals at restaurants ahead of time so I was sure to order healthy. I would have not had the success I did without such a great support system. Of both the instructors and the other mamas.
Amazing Results – In the end, I did not quite meet my goal, but I was so proud of what I accomplished. I lost 8.2 pounds and 7.5 total inches. I also cut 44 seconds off of my one-mile run. You can see my complete results and before and after pictures by clicking here. I have been wanting this for myself for almost two years. And I finally did it!
I am so happy that I committed myself to this life change. So happy, that I signed up for another 4-week session so I can continue towards my goal! I would highly recommend Body Back to any mom out there that is wanting to commit on making a change. You (and your family) will be so happy that you did.
